The Holliston Newcomers Club

Officer's Notes

From our President:

Well, Spring is definitely here and we have a lot to celebrate this month. On April 9, we will be celebrating all of our hard work done throughout the year by distributing the grants to a variety of well deserving local organizations. We encourage all members to join us to meet the grant recipients and celebrate our club’s success. For more information on the Grant Celebration night, please see the 1st VP and Community Investments articles.

This year Spring also brings us our House Tours on May 18. The House Tours Ways & Means Committee has 5 houses set for the tour as well as the Wine House, which is sure to be a big hit. However, they are in need of many volunteers at each stop of the tour. Check out their article to find out how you can help make the House Tours a huge success.

I want to say a special thank you to all the committee heads who organized the events during Easter with the Easter Basket drive for the Food Pantry by Erin and the Holiday Meals for the Senior Center by the Community Outreach Committee – Julie and Tony, Karen, Barb and Ann . And to everyone else who donated their time and effort to either or both committees, Thank You! Each and every one of you has contributed to making someone’s Easter extra special this year!

Spring not only signifies a change of seasons, but also signifies a time of change for Newcomers. The Nominating Committee is currently underway seeking new members for next year’s board. If you are interested in a position, please contact our Parliamentarian, Tanya Bureau for more information or any board or committee member.

There are many other fun events planned for Spring, so get out your calendars so you can mark down the next night out with the Ladies Escapes or Dinner Club. As you read through the newsletter you will find more events, such as the CPR Certification Class and Mike the Music Man.

Our next board meeting will be Wednesday, April 23. Arrive at 7:00 pm to socialize and the meeting begins at 7:30 pm.

From our First Vice President:
I hope some of you caught the live broadcast of the HEF sponsored Spelling Bee on March 17. Our team had a lot of fun being involved with this event. We didn’t bring home a trophy, but we did hold our own! Participating in this event is a tradition to take the place of our February General Meeting (the Spelling Bee is usually held in February), and we hope to continue that in years to come. It would be great next year to have some supporters in the audience!

I’d like to take a minute to remind everyone that all members of HNC are welcome, and actually encouraged, to attend our General Meetings. There was a very disappointing turnout for our March meeting, which was a review of the
Community Investment committee’s decisions regarding grants. This was a very important meeting, as we need a quorum to vote for the proposed grants… fortunately we did have that number (which is only 6!) but it was disappointing not to have more Newcomers members join us to hear what organizations around town would be benefiting from our hard fundraising work this past year.

With that said, I hope you will mark your calendars for the following upcoming general meetings. Our April General Meeting will be the Grant Distribution Dinner on Wednesday, April 9. It will be at the Holliston Historical Society Barn and will begin at 7:00 pm. We encourage all members of Newcomers to join us for this event. All recipients of the grants will be there to receive their money, and it is wonderful for us to have a strong turnout so that they see how important this aspect of our community involvement is to our organization. There will be food and drink, and, of course, lively conversation,
so please join us for a couple of hours to celebrate our grant recipients.

Our May General Meeting will be on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:30 pm. We will be welcoming Detective Ward from the Holliston Police Department to talk to us about Internet safety for our children. This talk will be geared towards parents of young children (preschool through middle school) and will include information about setting up parental controls and some situations that have been encountered here in town with regards to Internet safety. Please join us!
Thank you and hope to see you all on April 9!
